Udzungwa Mountains National Park

The Udzungwa Mountains National Park welcomes you to one of the best primate parks in the world. This park offers the beautiful natural heritages. The main of those are Mountains, Forests and fresh cascades. Udzungwa is one of the untouched forested lands remaining in the world. The park has the best of scenic mountains, rocks and moorlands. The Park has 100 ft high trees which has fungi and ferns on the barks. The best place for hikers and its forest includes a half day trip to Sanje falls. The main attraction to this park is the Ornithologists for the bird life which crosses more than 400 species. The Udzungwa Park has around 4 bird species which include the forest partridge, which resembles the Asian Genus. There are 6 primate species in the park. It has the rare species of primates Iringa red Colubus and Sanje Crested Mangabe which are not found anywhere in the world. It also has more than 2000 plant species which are regularly found in and around the park. The Udzungwa Park is well known for the high level of biodiversity of birds and animals.

The main activities in the park are:

  • Hiking: You can participate in a short 20 minutes walk to more than 3 days expedition. You can choose the most famous Sanje falls hike. The other places to hike are:
    • Sonjo waterfall
    • Hidden valleys trail
    • Prince Bernhards Waterfall
    • Msolwa waterfall
    • Lumeno Trail
  • Tradition Ngoma Drumming at the camp: You can meet a small group of farmers who perform a traditional ‘Ngoma’ at Hondo Hondo on request. This experience near the large campsite is truly memorable.
  • Trail to the Njokamoni Waterfalls: Njokamoni has some beautiful view points and it is ideal for sitting and splashing.

When to visit Udzungwa Mountains National Park:

You can visit the park year around. However, the best time to visit is during the dry season which is June – October.

You can drive from Dar es Salaam or Mikumi National Park.
