Ngorongoro Conservation Area

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area is one of the three divisions that comprise Ngorongoro District in Arusha region. This was designated to promote the conservation of natural resources, safeguard the interest of Ngorongoro Conservation Area’s indigenous residents and promote tourism. Ngorongoro Conservation Area is a unique protected area in the whole Africa where conservation of natural resources in integrated with human development. The main feature of conservation area include Ngorongoro crater, archaeological and paleontological site located at Oldupai Gorge and the early human footprint that were discovered at Alaitole in Ngarusi area.

People and Culture :

Cattle herding people moved into this area and lived here for long time and moved on, sometimes forced by other tribes. Today there are some 42,000+ Maasai pastoralists living in the Ngorongoro conservation area with their cattles, donkeys, sheeps and goats. Visitors are welcomed at two designated Maasai cultural bomas, one on the road to Serengeti and another close to Sopa lodge at Irkeepusi village.
Cultural Bomas :
You can visit the Maasai cultural Bomas in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area to learn more about their unique culture, to take photographs, and to buy mementos. The mains Bomas which you can visit are:
  • Kiloki Senyati Cultural Boma
  • Loonguku Cultural Boma
  • Irkeepusi Cultural Boma
  • Seneto Cultural Boma.

Wildlife :

The Ngorongoro Area contains over 25,000 large animals including : 26 black Rhinos. 7,000 wildebeests 4,000 zebras 3,000 Elands, gazelles 62 Lions Leopards 30 large Elephants 4,000 buffalos, spotted hyenas, jackals, wild dogs, cheetahs and other animals. However, during the migration season the count increase to 1.7 million wildebeest, 2, 70,000 zebras, 4, 70,000 gazelles.

When to Visit :

You can visit Ngorongoro Area year around. However, dry season would be the best time to visit.

How to get there :

By Air : Fly to Kilimanjaro International Airport at Moshi, from there you can get a charter flight, take a taxi or shuttle service. The distance from Moshi is around 55kms.

By road : The road from Arusha to Entrance gate is 160kms. The entire journey is on tarmac and it takes two hours. A 4x4 vehicle is required when entering Ngorongoro conservation Area.
