Selous was a game reserve. In November 2019 about two-thirds of the Selous game reserve turned into a national park. It was renamed Nyerere national park in honor of the first Tanzanian president.
This is the largest park reserve area in Tanzania and Africa in general. It is home to thousands of elephants, and it supports all other species of wild animals including endangered species of wild-dog, etc. In Selous, you can do canoe, birding, game drives, walking safaris which are supported by an armed ranger, etc. It is a fabulous and untouched park in the southern circuit area. In five days your soul and body will join together!!
At this national park, you can enjoy a 2-3hours canoe tour along the Rufiji river. On this tour, you can view elephants, buffaloes, bushbucks, hippos, etc. Furthermore, those who love birds will also see many species of waterbirds living in and close to water. Nyerere national park is still a virgin, they only get very few numbers of tourists visiting the park compared to national parks in the north. A visit to these national parks in southern Tanzania is ideal for people who dream to visit the less crowded areas.
